There are more personal injury lawsuits filed in Cook County than anywhere else in Illinois simply because there are more people and accidents in Cook County. Personal injury lawsuits are also called torts. Some examples of torts include car accidents, airplane crashes, slip and fall cases and molestation lawsuits (e.g. against a clergy member or teacher).
While there are numerous court locations in Cook County, most tort actions are filed at the Daley Center. The Daley Center is at 50 W. Washington St. in Chicago and is the main Cook County court house. When a personal injury lawsuit alleges damages in excess of $30,000.00 it will be assigned to the Law Division and most of the cases in the Law Division are filed in Chicago because the plaintiff's lawyers usually believe that is where you will get a more victim friendly jury. It also is true that most Chicago accident attorneys are located downtown and they prefer to have court be within walking distance of their office. All that said, there are plenty of injury lawyers in Skokie, Rolling Meadows, Markham and Maywood where the four suburban court houses are located.
More minor personal injury suits in Cook County are filed in the Civil Division. These cases usually are referred for arbitration. Lawyers file in this division because the damages are minimal and the Civil Division is a good way to seek justice without spending tens of thousands of dollars on a lawsuit.
If you are injured and seeking a Cook County personal injury attorney, there is no such thing as the "best attorney", but rather you need to find the best attorney for you. In other words, the accident law firms that are routinely handling multi-million dollar damage cases do a great job, but they are not the right usually the right lawyers for someone who was in a car accident and has $25,000.00 in medical bills. On the flip side, a lawyer whose personal injury practice consists of car accident cases would not be the right firm to represent the family of a pilot who was killed in a plane crash. They could do the work, but there are certainly more experienced firms out there.
To find the right law firm for their unique needs, people come to us. We use our expansive network to connect you with an attorney that has a track record of success with your situation. We make this recommendation after speaking with you, finding out the facts of your case and your goals. Every case is different and we don't believe in a "one size fits all approach."
On a weekly basis we read about dozens of settlements and trial results in Cook County. This greatly aids us in pointing people in the right direction. We also only recommend attorneys whose practice is focused on representing people in personal injury lawsuits and whose practice is based in Cook County. In other words, we don't recommend "jack of all trades" lawyers that do car accidents on Monday, divorce on Tuesday, bankruptcy on Wednesday, etc.
