Family law refers to areas of law such as divorce, child support, adoption, pre-nuptial agreements and child custody. If you are dealing with a family law issue in Lake County, Illinois we almost always recommend that you hire a Lake County based attorney to handle your case or someone who regularly appears there.
Every family law case in Lake County is heard in the main Waukegan courthouse. There are only four regular family law judges in this courthouse (this doesn't include the domestic violence courtroom that has two more judges) and they handle every case in Lake County. As a result these judges quickly become familiar with attorneys that regularly appear before the court and in our opinion the judges give these attorneys better treatment than lawyers who aren't considered "regulars".
The family law court is located on the first floor. One court is devoted to "proveups". Adoptions happen in the afternoon on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Trials take place in the afternoon every day in three of the courtrooms. Lake County requires mediation in cases where parties to a case can't come up with a parenting plan within 90 days of filing for a divorce.
In addition, we feel that Lake County, and Waukegan in particular, is a really tight knit legal community. Whether it be Bar Association events or after hours drinks, it is not un-common to see a tight knit group of attorneys together. This doesn't prevent these lawyers from being strong, independent advocates for their clients. However, it does at times lead to better case results and more cooperation which is all in the best interests of you the client.
Certainly there are some Lake County family law matters where a local attorney isn't the best attorney for you. For example, if you are involved in a divorce where complex forensic accounting is involved from a business that was started in the marriage, you may want a Chicago based law firm that has attorneys that often appear in Lake County on divorce and family law cases.
But if you have a typical divorce where you are dealing with issues of custody, support and dividing up debts and assets, not only do we think that a Lake County based family law attorney is likely right for you, it might also likely be cheaper (no payment for travel time) and make the case end sooner.
